I can’t really say whether yesterday’s entry concerning the continuing legal assault on Kamehameha Schools triggered the subsequent news coverage, but the Advertiser story by Rick Daysog appeared online just after 11 a.m., five hours after my posting. This morning’s Star-Bulletin story by Alex Da Silva advanced the story by pointing to a [...]

Wednesday…Aloha to Jill
May 23rd, 2007 · No Comments
I was saddened to discover yesterday that Jill Frierson died while we were on the mainland earlier this month. I learned of her passing when I saw a notice on the Republican Party web site yesterday and then looked up the Star-Bulletin’s obit by Richard Borreca.
We crossed paths with Jill many times, although she was [...]

Wednesday…Mr. Kitten now “Oreo” and settling into a new home
May 23rd, 2007 · 3 Comments
After a final day at home with Mr. Kitten (and a camera), this lucky guy was welcomed into a wonderful family right on our street in Kaaawa. It’s a perfect solution. We can visit whenever we like, our nine other cats get to come back from self-imposed exile, and Mr. Kitten gets a name–”Oreo”. Great [...]

Tuesday (con’t)…lawyer soliciting plaintiffs for new attack on Kamehameha
May 22nd, 2007 · 1 Comment
Within days of the announcement that Kamehameha Schools had settled a case challenging its admission policies, an attorney was already soliciting plaintiffs for a new lawsuit covering the same ground. Richard Rowland, president of the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, forwarded the solicitation to others.
I don’t know anything about David Rosen beyond the letters to the [...]

Tuesday…In the news
May 22nd, 2007 · 1 Comment
Richard Borreca has an important story today reporting on a significant court decision on Maui, where a state judge struck down a Campaign Spending Commission interpretation that barred corporations, unions, and political action committees from contributing more than a total of $1,000 to candidates during last year’s elections. But the stunner was that the [...]

Monday…Language and reporting, sustainability, John Birch Society, and Mr. Kitten
May 21st, 2007 · No Comments
Capitol Hill Blue had an interesting commentary on coverage of Sen. John McCain’s verbal outburst during last week’s meeting on the Senate’s immigration bill. I don’t know that I agree with the columnist’s views on what McCain’s comment means politically, but the question of how the press reported or failed to report his verbal [...]

Sunday, part 2…Kaaawa hacked again, plantations and housing, etc.
May 20th, 2007 · No Comments
Oh, no! I learned this morning that Kaaawa.net was hacked again, greeting visitors with a black screen, and at the top of the screen a short message: “Hacked by ULPOW.NET; The Eliminators (spyMASter)”.
Brenda in Austin was the first to send me word of the hack attack.
Because I was so annoyed with this hacker situation, [...]

Sunday…He’s a very cute kitten and available for adoption!
May 20th, 2007 · No Comments
Mr. Kitten got a visit yesterday from our favorite twins, obvious targets for our kitten adoption pitch except for the fact that they’re family is moving back to the mainland in just a few very short weeks. As a result, he’s still available and getting cuter by the day.
If you or anyone you know might [...]
