Sunday…Cat memories on a June Sunday, a bit of Sunday reading, and a few old photos of UH Manoa

June 17th, 2007 · No Comments · General

“Happy Fathers Day, Pal!”

That was what someone walking past said on Fathers Day back in June 1999 just after we had pulled a scrawny kitten from a thicket just down and around the corner from our house. It didn’t take long to name this guy “Leo” and he’s been with us ever since. Here he is as a newly rescued kitten, and more recently as a neurotic adult.

And I feel badly about failing to note the anniversary of Ms. Kua’s acquisition day back on June 6 and her passing on June 14.

In any case, we’re taking lunch over to my parents later today and things will be a bit hectic with cooking and all this a.m., so I’ll be taking it a bit easy here.

Here’s some Sunday reading courtesy of the Dallas Observer, which presents a fascinating look at the woman who hijacked the Dallas Press Club for several years.

The Center for Public Integrity has recently unveiled a major project, Collateral Damage, Human Rights and U.S. Military Aid after 9/11. It includes a long report on Indonesia, where Gov. Lingle chose to ignore the issue of longstanding human rights violations while touting her strange military alliance between Hawaii’s Dept. of Defense and the Indonesian military.

Manoa

I found a few photos taken in and around the University of Hawaii’s Manoa Campus between 1954 and 1959. This is one of several shots taken from the freeway near the Manoa exit. There’s little down in the lower campus except Klum Gym. No parking structure, no stadium or other big athletic facilities. Nothing on the rim of the Quarry, no law school, etc. Gateway House, on the far right, is the only multi-story building visible on this end of campus. Just click on the photo for more.
