5:30 a.m. and a the pre-dawn colors that have been painting the early morning sky in Kaawa are already beginning to fade.
We made it home safely, although a little later than planned, after cascading flight delays left our departure for Honolulu about an hour behind schedule.
Portland is a great place to visit. One thing you [...]

Scripps to close Cincinnati Post and Kentucky Post when JOA ends on Dec. 31
July 17th, 2007 · No Comments
Been there, done that.
I can easily imagine the mood in the newsrooms this morning when E.W. Scripps formally announced it will cease publication of the two newspapers at the end of year when the JOA with Gannett’s Cincinnati Enquirer expires.
Another sad day.

Tuesday…Time to head home
July 17th, 2007 · 1 Comment
We went to a matinee showing of Michael Moore’s “Sicko” yesterday in downtown Portland, Oregon.
Yup. We’ve been there for several days, and fly back later today.
We were surprised to see former Congressman Ed Case’s smiling face in a quick Sicko scene, caught as a bystander during a visit to the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay [...]

Monday…Come on, kick the ball…a classic planted story, and more

Why am I getting that feeling of Lucy holding the football and promising not to whip it out of the way at the last minute?
Perhaps it’s President Bush’s latest “wait until the final report in September” whining.

Sunday…another North Shore brawl, Newspaper Guild news, chaining dogs, and our Red Wing addition
July 15th, 2007 · 3 Comments
Here we go again. The Advertiser ran a news brief yesterday reporting another “brawl” on the north shore in which at least one person was injured and several shots may have been fired. Doesn’t this sound familiar? The last time around, back at the end of May, a man was killed in a similar sounding [...]

Former Star-Bulletin editor Chuck Frankel bemoans the impact of all too frequent press breakdowns on home deliver of the Star-Bulletin. He sent the following email to S-B Publisher Dennis Francis, with a cc here:
I wish David Black would spend money on new presses instead of trying to buy more newspapers. The poor [...]

Friday…Suggestion of a “planted” story draws more responses, and a few Friday felines
July 13th, 2007 · 2 Comments
Anyone who thinks that there’s a lack of a competitive attitude between the Advertiser and the Star-Bulletin had better reconsider in light of the evidence.
Yesterday’s entry, in which a reader rose to the defense of the Star-Bulletin, has stirred up quite a fuss.
First came a “leak” of an earlier email exchange between Advertiser editor Mark [...]
Thursday…A reader defends the Star-Bulletin, some photos from a gray morning, and the wisdom of Gene

Honolulu Weekly is a day late in reaching readers this week, courtesy of the breakdown of the press over at MidWeek, which prints the independent paper. The issue normally hits street racks on Wednesday morning, but this week won’t be getting there until today.
A reader passed along this comment concerning the flap (mentioned here yesterday) [...]
