Sunday…a leftover curry, Honolulu government on demand, digital resources, etc.

CurryThis was going to appear at the end of today’s entry, but the context down there just didn’t work. So I moved today’s food item up top.

This is the curry I made on Friday night from leftover pork chop. It’s always fun to find ways to make leftovers into treats. This certainly qualified. Click on the photo for more.

The Honolulu Academy of Art did quite well with its benefit auction yesterday at McClain Auctions. Several paintings by D. Howard Hitchcock were bid up into the $25,000 range, and several other paintings by Shirley Russell were up there over $6,000 or so. It was an eye-popping few hours.

Thanks to Jeff Garland for pointing me to this city site featuring video on demand from city proceedings, including the ability to search for specific topics.

City Council meeting videos are arranged by date, with the most recent at the top of the list. Click Video to watch the meeting with documents, or Agenda / Minutes to see just the documents. You can also search the archives by typing keywords into the Search box.

It seems like a step up in providing public access. Both Olelo and the city appear to deserve credit for moving in this direction.

On the topic of unusual resources, I stumbled onto the UH digital and digitized collections, where you can find the Bob Krauss Research Index (1951-2006), quite a fascinating example of journalistic organization. I also lost a lot of time browsing through the historical documents of Save Our Surf, which includes posters, flyers, petitions, and other documents from this groups activist past. What a great way to preserve and make available the documentation of modern political history. Of course, there’s lots of other stuff, from the photographs of longtime UH Manoa photographer Masao Miyamoto to the newspaper photos from the Hawaii War Records Depository from WWII. What a gold mine!

A couple of quotes caught my eye, both from the Advertiser on August 22.

“God will surf with the devil if the waves are good.” Dorian Paskowitz, surfing doctor from Hawaii. So pray for surf, I guess.

“Whenever people get out on boats and ships, each person’s different,” O’Halloran said. “Today there are so many good remedies available that really no one should be getting motion sickness if they take proper precautions. Make sure it’s in your system and you’ll have a great trip.” Terry O’Halloran, speaking for the Hawaii SuperFerry.

Hey, what happened to the “our ferry rides are so smooth” descriptions that we’ve heard throughout the past few years? Now we learn that you’d better take your anti-nausea potions for even routine rides on typical tradewind days. And this trip didn’t venture into the channels between the islands where weather will be a real factor. I wonder what sort of logo they’ll feature on the SuperFerry barf bags? Perhaps we should sponsor a contest….

What a great idea - a barf bag contest for the Superferry.

They might come in handy should people be stranded far from home with their car, dogs, etc., after the judge issues an injunction stopping the ferry.
