Thursday…NYT link, Guild rallies at the Advertiser, and what about those annoying auto warranty calls?

February 21st, 2008 · No Comments

Ah, it was my brief 15 minutes of blogger fame yesterday afternoon when the New York Times editorial blog , The Board, linked to yesterday’s entry about the Hawaii Democratic caucuses. Their entry has picked up a number of comment describing conditions at other caucus sites around the state.

Guild rally

Congressman Neil Abercrombie joined Honolulu Advertiser employees yesterday at a noon rally on the front steps of the Advertiser building to call attention to the union’s efforts to get a fair contract settlement.

As usual, Neil put on a fine display of oratory, making good use of a recent Gannett annual report to highlight the company’s deep pockets. Gannett directors got a public tongue lashing from Abercrombie, who met privately with Advertiser management the day before.

Speaking of Gannett, check out the independent “Gannett Blog“, a great critical perspective on the leading newspaper chain.

It seems like everyone I know has been getting unsolicited automated telephone calls at home or on cell phones from some company with a message saying that time is running out to renew warranty service on your car. I stayed on the line yesterday and pressed “1″ to speak with a sales agent. A human did come on the line saying she was calling about auto warranty service”, but when I asked the name of the company, she immediately cut off the call.

A quick search turns up numerous complaints from across the country about this company, always with the same approach of hanging up if asked about the sponsor. Can’t something be done?
