Saturday…Neil in the news, DOD documents, weekend reading, and a Kaaawa rainbow

May 10th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Poor Neil. Hawaii Congressman Neil Abercromie can’t be enjoying this week’s mentions in the news, from our local papers to the Washington Post and out into popular blogs like TPM Muckraker.

That wasn’t Neil’s only mention in the Washington Post this week, though. He also had an interesting write-up with his own advice to the Obama campaign. And looking for those stories, I found that I had missed this funny Neil story that appeared earlier this year in The Hill under the headline, “Rep. Abercrombie gets Craiged“.

A reader wondered whether there were any military analysts with Hawaii ties who were among those included in the Department of Defense program to guide news coverage, with specific reference to Jerry Coffee’s 2003 “fact finding” trip to Guantanamo. I haven’t seen any information on this, but it’s possible there may be clues in the documents the Pentagon disclosed to the NY Times that provided the background for their story on military analysts. All of those documents are now available online for your reading pleasure. If you find something of interest there, let me know (ian(at)ilind.net).

Noted: A relatively new blog covering issues on Molokai.

And, for your weekend browsing, try this list of the 33 biggest corporate implosions. Ever.

Kaaawa Rainbow

Finally, just for fun, a look at a recent morning rainbow. We were just a block or so from home, on our way back from watching the sunrise. The rainbow followed us for quite a ways before finally moving on. Just click for a larger photo.

Apropos of nothing timely…. I’m looking at your headlines and your byline. It struck me. Isn’t it
    Ka’a'awa?
“Ian Lind online daily from Kaaawa, Hawaii”
    “and a Kaaawa rainbow”
Since smallkeed time, was raised pronouncing each vowel. Which would give it the ol’ okina dakine. But new trend it seems is to pronounce it “Kaaaaaaah-vuh”. Or wot?
    Just wondering…

Ka`a`awa spurred my favorite “Pidgin to da Max” page with a comic of one guy saying Ka`a`a`a`a`a`a`a and the other guy saying “he went fo’ say Ka`a`awa an’ get stuck”
