Monday…Check the data on hiring by local broadcasters, bad news for newspapers

May 12th, 2008 · No Comments

Yesterday I happened to notice the fine print at the bottom of the KHON web site with a link to the “EEO Public Report”. It seems that the FCC has required each broadcaster to post their latest Equal Employment Opportunity report on their web site.

FCC rules require broadcasters to widely distribute job notices and to provide notice of full-time vacancies to employment recruitment organizations that request them. What’s interesting is that the reports show which job recruitment sources are producing results.

The FCC rule requires reports on each license anniversary date. The report on KHON’s web site is for the period January 27- September 3o, 2006. I’m not sure that’s the latest period, but it’s what is posted.

KHON reports that it filled 13 positions during the period, eight via employee referrals, four through the CareerBuilder Online search engine, and one via a non-employee referral.

None were reported via the Advertiser’s Sunday classifieds, and the Star-Bulletin doesn’t appear on their Master Recruitment Source List.

KGMB provides considerably more detail in its report for the period October 1, 2006 to September 30, 2007. Although notices are sent to a variety of places, the station gets most of its job candidates via its own web site, Craigslist, and employee referrals. The Honolulu Advertiser produced candidates on one job search. Overall, according to their list, the top sources of referrals were Craigslist, which resulted in 46 interviews, employee referrals (36 interviews), and the Hawaii Association of Broadcasters (14 interviews). Although Craigslist produced the most candidates, it resulted in only a single hire.

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got time for. Check these out on your own. The evidence seems pretty clear that newspaper job ads are a dying breed.

What’s this? It’s a link to a brief video. It’s an enthusiastic greeting from one of our favorite morning dogs, Alice Brown. Hopefully the movie will play properly.
