Saturday…crime alert (the Westboro Baptists are coming!), update on the voting system controversy, lots of vog, and celebrating birthday #94

May 17th, 2008 · No Comments

Hawaii Pacific University issued a crime alert in advance of the protest Sunday morning by the Westboro Baptist Church, calling it “An ANTI-WAR/ANTI-AMERICAN PROTEST”. I don’t think I would be calling this group “anti-war”, despite their statement that “God hates the american military!” and slogans like “Thank God for IEDs”.
For example, here’s part [...]

Friday…Diesel up another 20 cents a gallon; Daryl huffed, they puffed, the blog is gone, and more

May 16th, 2008 · 2 Comments

We put diesel in our tank yesterday. The price was about 20 cents a gallon higher than the last fillup, which was about the same amount higher than the time before that. I think yesterday was $4.469 per gallon. Ouch. When we bought this car, diesel was selling for less than gasoline. No more. At [...]

Thursday…New dogs, Convention thought, a Lehman footnote, odds & ends

May 15th, 2008 · No Comments

We’ve got a couple of new additions to our collection of Kaaawa Morning Dogs. These guys (and their people) recently moved into a new house in Kaaawa. We’ve seen them running on the beach a few times recently, and yesterday managed to arrange an introduction. That’s Fisher on the left, and Shiloh on [...]

The request for an exemption from the regular procurement process comes after an appeal of the contract award by a competing vendor, Election Systems & Software [...]

Tuesday…Rumored turnover at Honolulu Weekly, embedded links & privacy, Huffing & puffing, and a few morning dogs

May 13th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Another six months, another new editor. I’ve heard a second-hand report that’s the story, again, for Honolulu Weekly. I’ve got an e-mail out to a former Hawaii resident rumored to be coming back to take the job. It was just six months ago that I wrote almost the same thing about the hiring of Mindy [...]

Monday…Check the data on hiring by local broadcasters, bad news for newspapers

May 12th, 2008 · No Comments

Yesterday I happened to notice the fine print at the bottom of the KHON web site with a link to the “EEO Public Report”. It seems that the FCC has required each broadcaster to post their latest Equal Employment Opportunity report on their web site.
FCC rules require broadcasters to widely distribute job notices and [...]

Sunday…KHON story hit for promoting pseudo-scientific debate on global warming

May 11th, 2008 · 3 Comments

A press release announcing the University of Hawaii has signed on to The Climate Registry prompted several stories this past week, with the Star-Bulletin and all the local television news broadcasts covering the issue.
Only KHON’s Andrew Pereira also spotlighted a climate change skeptic.
While carbon footprint measurements have become a popular way for governments, companies and [...]
