Wednesday…Hawaii headlines return to the ‘Tiser, embarrassing turnout in our precinct, and McCain seen as cold warrior from down under

September 24th, 2008 · 2 Comments · General, Politics

The counter on this page slipped past 1.3 million sometime late last night, Hawaii time. Did you notice the return of the pesky “Hawaii” headlines in the Advertiser on stories referring to stories concerning Honolulu? I caught this one yesterday. “Hawaii mayor” refers, in this case, to Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann. By the way, I [...]

Tuesday…Listen to yesterday’s legal arguments in the rail case, more on Pat’s at Punaluu, peak oil, and a Superferry update

September 23rd, 2008 · No Comments · General

Hawaii’s Intermediate Court of Appeals heard oral arguments yesterday in the continuing challenge by the group, Stop Rail Now, to get it’s initiative question on the general election ballot, with a ruling expected to be issued later today. Don’t forget that you can listen to yesterday’s arguments via an MP3 file available on the court’s [...]

Monday…Facing the presidential music, and Pat’s at Punaluu plan causing controversy (revised)

September 22nd, 2008 · No Comments · Kaaawa, Politics

It’s interesting to see music playing a role in the presidential campaign. Two recent entries. Taking it back to Barack and Les Misbarack will cheer up your Monday morning. A proposal to reopen the former Pat’s at Punaluu restaurant is making waves in our part of the island. Pat’s at Punaluu is an oceanfront condominium [...]

Skinny Pigs, originally uploaded by ilind. Spotted at Windward Mall–what are these things? Guinea pigs without hair. Must be from one of those countries where they are considered a tasty snack. Think I’ll pass.

Post-election Sunday…Low turnout, few contested races, a handful of surprises, and remembering the Keating Five

September 21st, 2008 · 2 Comments · General

Not a whole lot of surprises in yesterday’s election except perhaps the extremely low voter turnout. Only about 1/3 of registered voters turned out, and the State Data Book estimates that perhaps 2/3 of those over age 18 are registered to vote. So even a majority of voters in the primary only represents slightly more [...]

Primary Election: Board of Registration to provide instant appeals of voter challenges

I just saw the notice that Honolulu’s Board of Registration convened this mornning at 7 a.m. at the State Capitol and will be available “to sit and hear appeals of election challenges” until the polls close this evening. Boards in each of the other counties are also at work today. Section 11-26 HRS provides, in [...]

Saturday…Another slip by Rep. Meyer, another for the Palin file, on the border, and Ms. Amedine

September 20th, 2008 · No Comments · General

Primary Election Saturday in Hawaii. Get up and vote if you haven’t already. Please. It seems that I got unreasonably distracted by the sloppy Photoshop work in Rep. Colleen Meyer’s latest campaign brochure and missed another matter altogether. One of her Democratic opponents in District 47, Jessica Wooley, was calling another problem to the attention [...]

Friday…Faulty Photoshop trips Rep. Meyer’s campaign brochure, time to say we can’t afford the Iraq war any more, lies and money, and Friday Felines

September 19th, 2008 · 2 Comments · General

Somehow I don’t think that using the magic of Photoshop to add a slightly demented looking Duke Aiona’s face into a picture of Gov. Linda Lingle and Rep. Colleen Meyer is going to give a boost to Meyer’s campaign. It did, however, provide some chuckles when Meyer’s campaign brochure arrived in the mail this week. [...]
