September 26th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Kaaawa, Photographs

I suppose it doesn’t get much better than this! Saturday morning, September 25. 6:49 a.m. We had the beach nearly to ourselves.

Fragments of Aloha Week history 1949-1955

September 25th, 2010 · 1 Comment · History, John Lind Collection

More stuff pulled from my dad’s boxes of “stuff”–bits and pieces from Aloha Week celebrations from 1949-1955, soon after the event was started by the “Oldtimers” of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. I’m not sure which year this Waikiki Surf Club float dates from. Is that Kalakaua Avenue? King Street? I’m not at all sure. [...]

September 24th, 2010 · 9 Comments · Campaigns, Politics

Two Campaign Spending Commission rules for the Big Island’s pilot project in comprehensive public election financing appear to unfairly discriminate against young voters and those in rural areas. The pilot project provides for public financing of candidates for Hawaii County Council who qualify by getting $5 contributions from at least 200 registered voters in their [...]

More Friday Felines from Kaaawa

Mr. Silverman invites you to view another Feline Friday photo gallery. Silverman is now at least 12 years old, by my figuring. He adopted us in September 1999, and appeared to be at least a year old at that time. He has, over the years, tamed himself. Now he’s almost totally an inside cat, a [...]

Another round of thanks to Ryan Ozawa, who has expanded his Hawaii Open Data Project with the addition of a list that includes the names and salaries of more than 1,900 employees of the State Judiciary. It’s in the form of a Google Docs spreadsheet and open to free use. In an email, Ozawa comments: [...]

Mufi gracious in defeat

September 22nd, 2010 · 19 Comments · Campaigns, General, Politics

I’ll probably take some flack for saying this, but I was impressed by Mufi Hannemann’s public graciousness in defeat. We saw him out late yesterday on Pali Highway with a group of supporters, waving a post-election “thank you” to passing motorists. I give him credit for that. But I guess it means he doesn’t see [...]

Money talks, but not always the loudest

September 22nd, 2010 · 5 Comments · General

I got curious this morning about how important money was in the primary election. In a quick check of just a few races, money is important–it’s terribly hard to win without any–but the person with the most money doesn’t always win. I checked the candidate’s pre-primary campaign reports and compared them to the election results, [...]
