With friends, the relationship is both special and unique. Our friend Ann Keppel was unwavering in her belief that children and youth were indeed real persons right from the start. Her belief in practice set the tone for a 45-year family friendship with Ann extending back to graduate school days at Madison as Hawaii became our adopted state.

Ann became a "portable aunt" to our three sons right down to the end. She had also in turn become "that big kid" to our grand children as chocolates and books and Keppel-humoring showered family meals periodically. She left a legacy.

She helped us all appreciate that thinking is a social activity and that, as "a family" (Ohana), all supplied ideas as needed. She helped us to instill toleration as integral to effective thinking. It was axiomatic with Ann to tolerate our thoughts, especially on childrearing and teaching, as part of her own thought--even when her thought defined itself in opposition to those of ours and of our family. Could anyone wish for a better family friend?

We especially grieve the loss of our "portable aunt" and "the big kid".

She is genuinely missed.
