That welcomeness and
collegiality waxed on
. I have a vivid memory
of Ann from the first time I walked into the Women's Studies
office in 1988, to drop off my application for the Asst Prof
position to teach 350. From across the room where she was
chatting amid a small group, Ann called over in a voice full
of gracious warmth, "You must be Jo!", swept across the room
for introductions, and invited me to join in what appeared
to be a potluck lunch. That welcomeness and
collegiality waxed on, from the subsequent job interview
with Ann and Alison (and Ann's framed mammogram, which
seemed like a third interviewer), to a lovely lunch (is
there a theme here?) during Ann's last visit through Madison
a couple of years ago. Through all the craziness of
academia and the university, she presided over a golden time
for Women's Studies, a period that I treasure. We will all miss
her. Much aloha, Jo
