Fact Check: Mayor–”Rail will ‘keep the country, country.’”

February 29th, 2012 · 20 Comments · Business, Campaigns, Politics

During his “State of the City” speech last week, Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle defended the planned rail system as a defense against sprawl and urbanization of other parts of the island. Here’s the key paragraph that caught my attention: Rail will ‘keep the country, country’. It will ‘keep Kailua, Kailua’. It will ‘keep East Honolulu, [...]

Ed Case says he’s no conservative

February 28th, 2012 · 29 Comments · Campaigns, Politics

I was surprised by a phone message yesterday morning from Senate candidate and former Congressman Ed Case. He wanted to respond to my post here on February 13 concerning the endorsement of Case by the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly. His response follows. Case also provided a copy of a letter addressed to Hawaii Democrats [...]

February 24th, 2012 · 3 Comments · Campaigns, History, Media, Politics

These could be mistaken for headlines in today’s news. Penalties asked against unregistered lobbyists. Both political parties rely on big developers, PACs for funds. Rail transit lobbyists evade public disclosure. But they actually date back 20 years to my own entry into self-publishing, a small monthly newsletter that I called “Hawaii Monitor.” Fresh from a [...]

That said, it’s clear the current dispute over the party’s January 21 election of Ted Liu, who served as director of the Depatment of Business, Economic Development and Tourism during [...]

Jump into Campaign 2012

February 17th, 2012 · 3 Comments · Campaigns, Politics

From Emily’s List , the pro-choice PAC, in an email alert yesterday: This morning, an all-male panel of religious leaders testified in front of a Congressional committee about birth control coverage. That’s right, only men — who are not doctors, by the way — were allowed to testify by the GOP leadership about critical women’s [...]

UH faculty endorses conservative Dem Ed Case

February 13th, 2012 · 18 Comments · Campaigns, Politics

The most interesting political news of the last couple of days was the UH faculty union’s endorsement of Ed Case in the US Senate race over Congresswoman Mazie Hirono, coupled with the results of a Star-Advertiser/Hawaii News Now poll showing Case running well behind Hirono among likely voters in the Democratic primary. Case is a [...]

City Council chairman tops mayor in campaign fundraising during latest period

February 2nd, 2012 · 6 Comments · Campaigns, Politics

A commenter yesterday asked about Mayor Peter Carlisle’s top contributors. The mayor actually reported a relatively quiet 6-months, with total contributions received of just $53,222.41. For a bit of perspective, that is 30 percent less than the $76,122.80 raised by City Council Chairman Ernie Martin, who happens to represent the district that includes Kaaawa. Mayor [...]
