Honolulu Star-Bulletin Closing Announced!

The news that the Star-Bulletin would close leaked out on Wednesday afternoon, September 15, 1999, after our publisher and managing editor emerged from a management meeting with somber expressions, word of a major announcement scheduled the next morning, and "no comment" beyond that. Word quickly spread to other media, and news of the Star-Bulletin's demise led the television news that night. A number of reporters had left for the day before the rumors emerged, and heard about the closure for the first time while watching news on the tube.

Thursday, September 16.

First thing in the morning, Gannett sent someone to rip the Star-Bulletin sign off the front of the building, apparently so that it couldn't serve as the backdrop for tv coverage of the news. It was later retrieved from a dumpster, and borrowed back for at least one appearance in the newsroom.

Hallway meetings, phone calls home.

City Editor Dan Woods contemplates the news. "I have nothing to say...I don't know what to say."

Several meetings took place in the newsroom Thursday, including the early morning announcement by Star-Bulletin owner Rupert Phillips, followed later in the morning with an appearance by Gannett honchos.

A lot of folks wore their blue and white Star-Bulletin shirts for the announcement in a spontaneous display of solidarity. In the midst of the morning's chaos, paychecks were delivered. That's long-time political writer Richard Borreca enjoying the irony.

Managing Editor Dave Shapiro with our same-day edition announcing the closure: "Star-Bulletin will close Oct. 30 after 117 years"
