Gene "Tarzan" Smith

In October 1940, the recently formed Hawaii Surfing Association sponsored Gene Smith's attempt to paddle a surfboard between Oahu and Kauai. Smith was successful, and several years later paddled from the Big Island to Maui. Here are a few photographs of Smith as he prepared for the Kauai trip, as well as news stories that appeared in Hawaii newspapers.
