On assignment: Umatilla, Oregon. November 8, 1968
Photos and notes by Ian Lind
| It was the fall of 1968 when the town of Umatilla in eastern Oregon banned the sale of Playboy Magazine. This quickly became news in the college town of Walla Walla, up north in Washginton, where the rumor was that a store just outside the Umatilla city line was doing a brisk business in the banned mags. It didn't take the Whitman College Pioneer long to go after the story, dispatching a team of intrepid researchers to check it out. I don't remember how my camera and I were invited along on this assignment, since I wasn't a regular at the campus newspaper. In any case, I recently ran across these nearly 40-year old negatives and the story they tell. If there's an archive of Pioneers, maybe somebody at Whitman will be able to find a copy of the story that we filed after the trip to Umatilla. |
