Cleo and I just returned from Malaysia via Tokyo, and were shocked to find out that Ann had passed away the day before

Cleo last saw Ann on her birthday. She took Ann out to dinner to celebrate her birthday, and Ann picked the Mariposa, since she had never been there. Ann had several martinis and steak and lobster, and it turned out to be a very extra precious evening for Cleo in retrospect.

At that very moment, I was in New York, and had lunch with Maxine Greene, who always asks about Ann--having known her for many many years as a fellow education professor. Maxine is frail, and bent, but still active in meeting with students and giving her inspring talks on aesthetics and education. We discussed Ann's professional work over the years, and I was to convey her good wishes to Ann when I had returned.

Our granddaughter Nicole, who recently visited Ann with Cleo, said she was very worried--she wondered who would take care of the cats; the cats immediately had taken a liking to Nicole and showed off themselves to her delight.
