Orchid science
The garden workshop of Professor Carey D. Miller
Manoa Valley - January 1971
My mother was a student of Carey D. Miller at the University of Hawaii in the 1930s, worked on her staff until early in WWII, and remained a close personal friend until her death. Miller, in addition to being a world class nutritionist and food scientist, was in love with orchids, and later in life poured her prodigious energies into new varieties of miniatures. I recently found and scanned several negatives from a 1971 visit to her Manoa home . Click on this photo for more views from Miller's home, or click here for photos of the University of Hawaii as it appeared when Miller arrived in Hawaii in 1922.
