Little things added to this past week. We saw the green flash as the sun rose on Wednesday, and the next morning we found these marbles in an area some call “Marble Beach”, just across from Kaaawa School. Whenever the tides and currents stir up new piles of sand, especially from that layer that contains slightly larger bits of coral, glass, and rocks, we look for marbles. They’re not common, but we’ve found our share over the years.

The Advertiser’s Derick DePledge was among several people commenting on yesterday’s entry. I would recommend backtracking to read those comments.

I also had conflicting reactions from readers via email. This one was positive.

Just a quick note to say how terrific your coverage of the Superferry is. I thought I was well beyond being shocked by the way money people can rig media commentary, especially here in Hawai’i, but the cascade of pro-Superferry propaganda from the airwaves and in print–not only on Perry & Price–has really been stunning. Great to read your stuff in contrast.

But someone flagged by Kona blogger Aaron Stene has another view, shared over at Hawaii Threads [ooops–I must stand corrected here–I originally attributed these comments to Aaron because he sent them to me yesterday morning, along with a link back to Hawaii threads, without further explanational. But I heard from him today clarifying that he was the messenger and not the author. I am so sorry for the confusion, and am quite glad I didn’t get too snarky in my reply. Now perhaps I should sharpen up to respond to the other guy….

is it just me or does Mr. Lind need some new material?? I’ve been following him after seeing him referenced on this site and can’t seem to grasp why anyone finds him interesting. He seems to just harp on the same stuff. Let’s see, he doesn’t care for republicans, the Superferry, UH Regents, The Star Bulletin, Military, Home Depot, Amazon….

He talks about those being biased in their opinions like he is someone that is objective. ha!

He does like cats so that does get him a couple of points! Not trying to rag on him too much but his insight lately has been less then meaningful.

With the above correction, this should be disregarded. Hmmm. I guess this is a recent antipathy since just a couple of weeks ago Aaron blogged about reading my site and picking up info on “a very interesting fight” between Pacific Lightnet and Hawaiian Telcom. He even included, without comment, a link to the original lawsuit hosted, where else, back on this site.

Such quibbles aside, let’s look at the writer’s Aaron’s main beef. He writes: “Let’s see, he doesn’t care for republicans, the Superferry, UH Regents, The Star Bulletin, Military, Home Depot, Amazon….”

Actually, he’s misreading things. It’s not that I don’t care about the UH Regents, for example. I just wish they would not cling to a pattern of secrecy. Amazon? I shop there all the time. I just with they wouldn’t discriminate so blatantly against Hawaii consumers. Same with Home Depot. The Superferry? I’m an agnostic on ferry service, other than not believing the rosy financial projections. I just wish think this company should not have assumed it could buy its way past an environmental review. And so it goes with each of these subjects. I don’t have a blanket viewpoint, but try to point out and provide evidence to support specific critical comments.

Perhaps I end up goring too many interests that are dear to Aaron’s heart. No problem. That’s why he has his own blog over there in Kona. And he gives points for the cats, so he can’t be all wrong! More power to him.

So sorry, Aaron! Now I have to figure out who really left those comments?

The Advertiser reports this morning on next week’s Waikiki performance by the Air Force Thunderbirds which will necessitate closing off a large offshore area to surfers. I wrote about this several months ago in a Honolulu Weekly column. What happens if there’s a nice south swell? Will they start arresting surfers and end up with a wild scene? Didn’t they learn anything from trying to sweep surfers out of Nawiliwili last week? Unfortunately, the Advertiser story just slips in the info on the Waikiki security zone without commenting on the impracticality of the move.

I imagine city and state officials are praying for no surf.

So it goes on this Saturday.
