I checked on my dad’s boat yesterday over at the Ala Wai Boat Harbor, and found that the owner of a boat moored nearby has created a small memorial to Lindsay Kane, who was killed last week in a motorcycle accident caused by a hit-and-run driver. There’s a copy of a Star-Bulletin story, flowers, a couple of bottles of beer.
And Lindsay had been working hard fixing up the boat over the past few months, with lots of the woodwork replaced and refinished, new metal railings, new paint, etc. It looks great.
Now I’ve probably got the sad task of selling the boat, which started out as the boat awarded to Duke Kahanamoku during an appearance on the early television program, “This is your Life”, back in about 1957, or so the story has come to us.
Meanwhile, my dad is still in a nursing home on Beretania Street, just a couple of blocks from where his business was located for many years. As the new year begins, he’s looking very well and responding to the daily physical therapy. By the way, the picture was taken with my new iPhone.
And now we’ve gotten the secret news. His hair isn’t dyed. Really. I think that his beard would grow out gray, but not the hair on his head.
Somehow I missed out on that gene that avoids gray hair. I apparently inherited hair from my mother’s family. So it goes.
If you’re an early reader (it’s now just about 5 a.m. in Hawaii), let me warn you: I accidentally hit the button to make this public before it was finished. So I’ll probably be extending this entry in the next 30 minutes. Please stop back and check.
Several weeks ago, I mentioned that the Google Mail account of an old friend of mine had been hacked into and emails with a fake plea for contributions sent to everyone in his address book. Google responded by shutting down his account and his blog, hosted on Blogspot, now part of Google.
Gene sent the following update about his experience with some sage advice.
Many of you know that on Dec. 11, 2008 my google account was hijacked by someone who sent many of you a letter from Accra, Ghana requesting money in my name. While you should feel free to send me money I would prefer if you sent it to one of the addresses found below in my signature tag. The total account including my blog which many of you received by email, and all of my email address list is gone. Putting this together again is an impossible challenge. Most of the blog can now be found at a new address, http://peaceprobe.wordpress.com . It is impossible to reconstruct the several hundred member email list to which I sent blog postings. I am sending this to a partially reconstructed list that has people in it who probably were not on the list before. Just send me a note saying you can’t take another occasional email and I will take your name off for future weekly blogs postings. And, if you know of people who might welcome my postings let me
know.Meantime there is a little learning in this tragedy at least for me and maybe for you.
1. Always keep an offline copy of your email list.
2. If you are a blogger keep dated copies off line.
3. Be careful about how much you trust Google or any of the other silicon valley darlings for that matter. In the absence of telephone support I sent (and continue to send) daily appeals to Google, the owner of gmail, requesting access to my accounts at least to copy all the materials. Their responses are automated, polite in an overly nice sort of way, and completely unhelpful.
4. One of the gifts of this whole episode has been the telephone calls from many of you inquiring about my travels in Accra and just checking in. Thanks for those calls.
Live and learn.
And I was asked what iPhone applications have been the first loaded onto my new phone. Here’s the list so far.
Accuweather
Things, (a list manager).Flight Tracker
So you can see that I’m having fun. But all this gets its first workout in practice over this next week. Some of these may be replaced, based on experience. I’ll update in a week or two.

First of all, thank you so much to all of you who have expressed your condolences, lit candles and made donations to help with my uncles services.
For those of you who dont know, on Monday December 29th, My Uncle Lindsay Kane was struck by a hit and run vehicle while riding his Harley Davidson around 3:20 PM. He later died that evening.
My uncle was a great man. He was the youngest of seven children; loved fishing; loved family; loved life. There’s not ONE person that disliked him. Lindsay Kane was a man that would help anyone in need, friend or foe. But on the afternoon of December 29th, the driver of the pick up truck, didnt bother to stop.
The suspected driver is identified as Siaosi Apakei Feleunga. He’s also known as George or one eyed george. He’s 31 years of age.
HPD would like to talk to him. If anyone knows his whereabouts or was a witness to the incident, please contact HPD investigators at 529-3499.
Our family is strong. We’re here for each other, and on behalf of our family we greatly appreciate the repostings and the prayers sent our way. We are thankful we live somewhere with so much love.
A memorial Fund has been set up for my Uncle. THE LINDSAY KANE MEMORIAL FUND.

I hope I look as good as your Dad when I’m in my 90′s, although I don’t think that will be a problem because the excesses of my youth will likely keep me from ever reaching that advanced age.
I’m sure Doug White appreciates those blog tips now, altho’ for completely different reasons.
Thank you so much for the nice things you’ve said about my brother Lindsay. He spoke fondly and often about your father. I believe his last visit with your father was on your father’s birthday, December 7th.
Lindsay was so fond of your father he was trying to help him fill in his “family tree”! In the process however, we found that your sister had been doing the same.
Again, thank you for your kind words and smiles.
