Congratulations to Lucy Jokiel, who takes over as editor of Honolulu Weekly next week. She replaces Ragnar Carlson, who held the position since mid-2008.
Jokiel is a veteran journalist who most recently served as editor of HMSA’s Island Scene Magazine. She’s also spent time with Hawaii Business and Island Business, according to her bio on the Island Scene web site.
Carlson says he’s not ready to discuss his future plans, but confirmed that he will be returning to journalism in Hawaii after some personal travel and down time.

Returning?
Yup, returning after taking off for travel and vacation. Returning from vacation. It’s a concept.
The phrasing of the piece makes it sounds like Mr. Carlson had another job in journalism previous to his stint at the Weekly and would be returning to that type of work.
I think some suspect that being the publisher’s husband was his major qualification for the position at the Weekly

Some definitely do suspect that I got the job because I?m married to Laurie. Others suspect it?s because I?m her son, and still others point to the possibility that my only qualification is that I?m her nephew.
Laurie Carlson and I are unrelated, by marriage or anything else.

I remember being handed a sample Weekly at a Hawaii International film Festival showing at the Varsity Theatre a few months before it started being published on a regular basis. Actually, I was surprised it took so long to get started, but I assume that $$$ – or its lack – was a major factor.
Ahhh – those were the days. Although I was already on my second computer, had a Compuserv e-mail account and was already using my first cell phone – about ten inches long with another four inches of antenna – I can remember spending long hours on the (real) phone and going to libraries on and off-campus to do my research.
Neil was about to be elected for his first term in Congress and Mufi to the City Council and Frank Fasi for his gazillionth term as Mayor – or had just been. HIFF has shifted around over the years from mid-October to early December so the General Election may have already been held by then.
Anyhow, best of luck in wateva you do and be sure to let those of us who need to publicize our community activities & events where you’re going to be next.
