she was a model for me
of how to really CARE about students -- the whole
student, not just the intellect. Thank you for letting me
know about Ann. I am glad she died peacefully and quickly,
but there's no way this is welcome news. I had hoped to see
her soon. She was my major advisor when I did graduate work
in education at the University of Hawaii over twenty years
ago, and she has been a close friend ever since. From our first meeting, she
was a model for me of how to really CARE about students --
the whole student, not just the intellect. I have a
treasured photograph of the two of us; we are wearing huge
grins and head leis that we made from tea leaves and
bougainvillea picked in her yard. When I received a teaching
award at my university a few years back, she sent me a
beautiful haku lei to wear; it had bougainvillea in it.
I am missing her. Ruth Herndon
