Dr. Keppel invited me
to a March 2002 Honolulu Symphony concert. During
intermission, as usual, we made our way outside where she
talked with friends and university colleagues. Afterwards,
we made our way back into the concert hall and to our
seats. While the performers were
warming up, I was feeling feisty and ignored because Ann was
working the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle. I turned
to her and said, "What are those big ukuleles for?" and
pointed in the general direction of the double
basses. She came right back at me.
She looked at the stage and said, "Perhaps you should ask
the male cello players what are those things that they
scratch at between their legs." Cynthia Kaneshiro
